Come what may, and love it.
With my impending due date approaching quickly I can't help but feel a sense of dread as I worry about my labour. I know what I'm getting myself into and some days I wish I could change my mind. As I was out to dinner with my mom and sisters the other night they were asking me questions about the baby. What do you think she'll look like? How will she behave? It occurred to me that I hadn't thought enough about these things because I am so focused on going through labour that I haven't been concentrating on the most important thing and blessing to come – the baby.
I think this can be true in all of our lives with challenges and trials that are sent to us. When those daily challenges come our way do we get so caught up in them that we lose our eternal perspective? Do we forget all the blessings that will come to us in the eternities?
Elder Eyring stated, “ “Even when you feel the truth of [the] capacity and kindness of the Lord to deliver you in your trials, it may still test your courage and strength to endure. The Prophet Joseph Smith cried out in agony in a dungeon. The Lord’s reply has helped me and can encourage us all in times of darkness. Here it is: ‘My son, peace be unto thy soul; thine adversity and thine afflictions shall be but a small moment; And then, if thou endure it well, God shall exalt thee on high; thou shalt triumph over all thy foes’ (D&C 121:7–8).” (Henry B. Eyring, “Adversity,” Ensign, May 2009)
Our afflictions are such a small moment, and if we endure it well we will be rewarded. I am so grateful for the gospel and for the eternal perspective it gives. It makes going through difficulties so much more comforting when we know that our Saviour is there to comfort us and we know we will be blessed. We know that the things we are going through are sent to us for our own good and that they will make us stronger. I need to keep my upcoming “challenge” in perspective and it should be more obvious to me that going through labour is such a small amount of time in comparison to being able to enjoy a beautiful spirit that will come to our home. I know that as we keep our eternal perspectives we may be able to deal with what comes, and endure it well so that we may be exalted after this life.
