There is a great service opportunity to make some preemie hats for a hospital in Manilla if you'd like to help out. If you need patterns or more information please contact Lynn Skinner in the Mackenzie ward at 403-532-1687.
There is a maternity hospital in Manilla called Fabella where women are able to deliver there for free. The hospital is sparsely equipped but clean. Because of the lack of prenatal care there is a high rate of "low birth weight" babies. These babies have a harder time regulating their body temperature, and are in need of little toques to aid them. The women in the Philippines do not know how to knit (no need to really) and if taught, they still do not have access to the supplies needed. We are hoping that some sisters in the stake who can knit, would be willing to use up their "leftover" soft yarn and knit some preemie baby hats. (see links for patterns). The donations will be sent at the end of March to the mission office in Quezon/Manilla. So it's not a big rush, but if you could knit one or two by then then that would be greatly appreciated. Please remember, the hats must be made for preemie babies and low birth weight babies. These babies do vary in head size, so some variation is ok but the regular newborn hat size would be too big for these babies. Another possibility is to sew hats out of used tee shirts.
