Fabulous Friday...

Thank you to those who participated in the fun Costume Exchange this month!  *Please remember to return any tagged costumes to their owner after Halloween.*  Also, there were a few costumes left behind.  Contact Tannis for more info.
Oh, and for those of you who are not on Facebook, here is that delicious trifle recipe:

First layer is a spice cake (I used a butter pecan mix with 1/4 tsp each cloves, all spice, nutmeg and 1/2 tsp cin). Second layer 1 can of pumpkin pie filling with1 box of vanilla pudding and 2 tbsp brown sugar and 1/2 tsp cin. 3rd layer whipping cream. Alternate layers and top with skor bits or crushed ginger snaps. Voila!

Congratulations to Jody D., and Theoni H. on the births of their sweet little babies!

October has been a busy and fulfilling month for many who participated in the Calgary Temple Open House, Youth Cultural Celebration, and Dedication.  Thank you to everyone who put in time and talents to make these events possible!

Come to Our September Activity!

Hello Sisters,

We hope you've all had a wonderful summer!

We look forward to catching up with all our sisters at the upcoming Relief Society activity this Thursday, September 6th, at the church, at 7:00pm!

There is so much excitement building as we approach the open house and dedication of our very own temple here in Calgary!  The stake has provided invitations for us to hand out to our friends and neighbours.  There is even a video announcement.  Many in our communities are receiving these invitations with gratitude and seem to be sincerely looking forward to this rare opportunity.  Now is a great time to prepare for these events!

If you wonder what kinds of questions and curiosities your non-member friends might have, and how to answer them well, you'll enjoy the panel discussion we have planned for you on Thursday!

We will be making a beautiful reminder of the temple for our homes as well.  Angie has provided a few options for the wooden/photo craft, and we can't wait to create!

We hope to see you all there!

love,
Your Relief Society Presidency

June Meeting

Hello sisters!

Just a quick reminder that our Media Matters night will take place tonight at 7:00pm at the church.  Rod and Donna Gustafson will be teaching a class on "Monitoring Media" in the Relief Society room.  If you're interested in improving media safety in your home, or just need to know how to get started, you'll love their class, as they are our resident experts.

If you've got that covered and you're curious about how you can "Let Your Light Shine, Online", please join us in the Primary room for a look at how to blog, and other opportunities for good online.

p.s. If you are not the tech wizard at your home and would like to bring your husband along, feel free.

Visiting Teaching Conference

Hello Sisters!
Just a reminder that this coming Sunday at 1:00, you are invited to the Relief Society room for a refreshing snack at our visiting teaching conference.  Those serving in Young Women and Primary get that hour off, as the priesthood will be filling in.  We look forward to seeing you all!
Also, a very Happy Mother's Day to all our women!  Are we not all mothers?  ; )

Thank you!

A big thank you to those who prepared for and participated in our meeting in May, "Love at Home"!  We had some wonderful guest speakers who among other things shared with us the wisdom in staying close to the spirit while raising teenagers, and using creativity to invite the spirit into our homes.

Thank you!

It was wonderful to see so many sisters and their daughters attend the RS party last month!  It was an inspiring night as we celebrated the Relief Society and the new temple under construction in our city.  We wish to thank all those who helped to make it possible.  Thank you for sharing your talents, testimonies, and service with us.  Please phone or email Chris P. if you would like to have a copy of your memento photograph sent to you.  : )

Cake Frosting Recipe

A number of you have asked for the recipe for Lynda's frosting that was on our cakes at the March 17th Party... it was so light and creamy! : P

  • 2 cups Whipping Cream (1/2 L)
  • 1 Tbsp. Sugar
  • small instant pudding mix (flavour of choice - we had vanilla, Lynda prefers pistachio)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tsp. extract (flavour of choice - we used coconut)

Directions
1. Whip first two ingredients until stiff peaks form.
2. In separate bowl, mix small instant pudding mix and 1 cup of milk. Whisk until thick (approx. 2 minutes).
3. Combine mixes and 1 tsp. extract. Whip together, being careful not to over-whip.

Sunday Lesson Quote

From #3 Our Testimony of Jesus Christ

"The happiest men and the happiest women that you know in the world are those who are conforming their lives to the teachings of the gospel of Jesus Christ. They are those who have the assurance of eternal life; they are those who understand the purpose of our being. … As I have traveled to and fro in the world bearing this message, my soul has been filled with joy, and my eyes have been dimmed with tears, when I have seen how perfectly men’s lives may be transformed by the gospel of Jesus Christ. I have seen those who were discouraged, those who were in darkness, those who questioned the purpose of their being, and when they have had taught to them the glorious truths of the gospel of Jesus Christ, they have changed, they have learned to be happy, to be contented, to be satisfied, to be enthusiastic in believing and teaching the gospel that was proclaimed by Jesus Christ when he dwelt upon this earth and traveled in Galilee.
Brethren and sisters, the world does not understand that, but it is our mission to assist them to understand it, and it is not with egotism, it is not with arrogance, but with charity for all, with loving tenderness, that this message is sent forth. …
As one of the humblest among you, I thank him with all my heart for the assurance that has come into my life. … Above all, I thank him for the knowledge that has been burned into my soul; I know that my Heavenly Father lives, I know that Jesus Christ is the Savior of mankind, and that there is no other name under heaven whereby men and women may be exalted, but the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. I do know that he came into the world in this latter day, that he bestowed divine authority upon a humble boy who was seeking the truth, and the result of that has been the organization of the Church with which we are identified; and there is with it the power of God unto salvation to all those who believe."

Q & A: Sandwiches for the Drop-In Center

Q: Does our ward donate sandwiches for the homeless?
A: Yes we do!  We've been participating in this program for years!  The Drop-In Center accepts donations of sandwiches, and cookies.  They also take pillow cases and other bedding, clothes, and baby items.

Q: Who collects the donations?
A:  Our ward's Compassionate Service Leader takes sandwiches and cookies.  She can also take other donations to a couple who volunteers monthly and will deliver them when they go.  Sandwiches can be dropped off at Janae L's home every other month, on the first Tuesday evening or by 10 am on Wednesday.  *See the sidebar for the current schedule.

Q: What kind of sandwiches are accepted?
A:  Any kind!!!  Even PB&J!  One loaf or two - or more if you can.  All donations are welcome.  : )

Q: Do we have to bag them individually?
A: No.  Just stack and slip them back into the original loaf bag.

Q:When was this program started?
A:  We've been involved with the Drop-In Center specifically for over 15 years.  Click HERE to read a great article about Calgary members and their involvement with the homeless.  : )

If you can donate, please mark the future sandwich dates on your calendar.  It may help to be aware of upcoming opportunities when grocery shopping so you can be prepared.  Loaves of bread can be stored in the freezer for convenient use when the day arrives!

Sparkling Cranberry Brie Bites

Makes about 16

Sugared Cranberries

2 cups fresh cranberries
1 cup good maple syrup
1 cup granulated sugar

Rinse cranberries and place in a medium bowl. Heat syrup in a small sauce pan just until warm. Pour over cranberries when syrup is warm, not hot, or cranberries may pop. Cool, cover, and let soak in the refrigerator overnight.
Drain cranberries in a colander. Place sugar in a large bowl or baking dish. Add cranberries in 2 batches and roll around until lightly coated in sugar. Place on a baking sheet until dry, about 1 hour.

16 crackers
8 oz Brie cheese
cranberry chutney or cranberry relish
fresh mint for garnish

Assemble crackers with one slice of brie, a light layer of cranberry chutney, and 4 or 5 sugared cranberries. Garnish with fresh mint sprigs.

Cake Pops According to Elisa

Bake your favorite cake and let cool.
Prepare your favorite icing.
Crumble cake and gradually add icing until the mixture sticks together so you can form shapes. Since each cake varies in density this will not be the same amount of icing every time. Generally I use one cake to ½ batch of icing.
Form shapes and flash freeze, no more than 20 minutes.
Place on 6” lollipop stick and cover with candy melts or chocolate (thinned slightly with oil or real butter). Add your desired decorations. If dipping more than one color on the same cake pop let the first color dry before doing the next one. Use a regular kitchen mug to stand cake pop in until completely dry.

I use Wilton 6” lollipop sticks and Wilton candy melts (can be purchased at Michaels). However, when I make these to send to school I use nut free chocolate chips.

Chocolate Sheet Cake

½ cup butter or margarine
½ cup shortening or margarine
4 tbsp cocoa powder
1 cup water
2 cups flour
2 cups white Sugar
½ cup buttermilk or sour cream
1 tsp baking soda
2 eggs, beaten
½ tsp salt

Mix dry ingredients together. In medium sized sauce pan mix butter/margarine/shortening, cocoa, and water. Bring to boil, remove from heat and cool for a minute. Add dry mixture. Add eggs and buttermilk/sour cream. Pour into a greased cookie sheet 11”x15”. Bake 375F for about 18-20 minutes.

Cream Cheese Frosting:
½ cup margarine or butter
½ cup cream cheese
4 cups icing sugar

Cream butter and cream cheese. On low speed, gradually add icing sugar one cup at a time. Add 1-3 tbsp milk for more spreadable.

This can be made with 1 block of cream cheese and 4 cups of icing sugar for a richer flavor.
